Portuguese fund buyers undisturbed by equities sell-off

Fund selectors in Portugal are far from concerned by the world’s equity markets’ rough start to the year. To the contrary, they see the current weakness as an opportunity to further increase their still relatively low exposure to equities.

But this percentage could change, as some 55% of interviewees plan to increase their allocation this year. They believe European equity markets will recover from their woes as the year progresses, as they do not see fundamental problems for most of Europe’s companies, perhaps with the exception of the oil sector. But as this sector has less prominence in Europe than in other parts of the world, it’s only an extra reason to put your money in European equity funds.   

The Portuguese believe Mario Draghi and his ECB will once again come to the rescue of investors. All respondents think the ECB’s QE programme will be augmented in March, expecting this will give equity markets a boost.
